Client: Cleveland Clinic Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland - www.clevelandclinic.org
Industry: Healthcare
Summary
The Cleveland Clinic is a not-for-profit, multispecialty academic medical center that
integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. Founded in 1921 by
four renowned physicians with a vision of providing outstanding patient care based
upon the principles of cooperation, compassion and innovation, Cleveland Clinic has
become one of the largest and most respected hospitals in this country and the world.
Business Goals & Objectives
Laboratories have used the same process for documenting lab tests and results for
centuries. Specifically, all notes were captured in a notebook. Notebooks were
subsequently secured in a desk drawer or bookcase. Access to notebooks, if they could
be found, was limited. Sharing of knowledge was archaic. The Cleveland Clinic
wanted to improve their laboratory processes.
Entara Solution
The Entara SmartLab solution provides a tool supporting the work done by scientists in
a laboratory replacing both archaic documentation processes as well as workflow.
More importantly, it transforms a laboratory from a “sole practitioner” mentality to a
collaborative environment.
The key components of SmartLab include the following:
• Electronic lab notebook – Device used to capture information including experiment results and associated notes.
• Knowledge management workbench – Mechanism through which data captured in laboratory is analyzed, augmented and published.
The technology used to assemble this system includes:
• Convergence of off-the-shelf technologies (i.e., commercially available hardware, software, advanced technologies, and life sciences instrumentation).
• Multiple information recording modes (e.g., speech, voice, handwriting, and life sciences instrumentation) allows information capture via the method suitable to a specific situation, researcher, and experiment.
• Workflow and information storage policies are strictly enforced to promote precision, reuse, and availability.
Client Results
Through Entara’s leadership, SmartLab generated the following benefits:
• Reduced transcription time (on average, 14.3% of researcher’s time was spent on transcription.)
• Reduced duplicate experimentation and individual data sets.
• Provided wireless connectivity for mobility and immediate access to remote knowledge resources (e.g., other colleagues, data sources, and systems.)
• Enhanced workflow.
• Improved adherence to federal compliance requirements (i.e., HIPAA, CFR 21Part 11, PKI digital signatures.)
• Enhanced data security.
